We just love it when we find people who are equally enthusiastic (if not more so) about new music and in particular the music we're presenting as part of música/TUMBALONG!
Andrew Boon (Stoney Roads and FBi's Frequency program) is at the top of that 'love' list because he took the time to tell us why he's excited about Tiger & Woods....
Tiger & Woods, similar to fellow música/TUMBALONG artist SBTRKT, like to shroud their true identities in mystery. It's a seemingly growing trend amongst confident, emerging artists who view their musical output as more than enough of an identity.
In the early days of their much sort after and seemingly scarce twelve inch releases, the guessing game on the identity of T&W was rampant. Personally I heard theories by the dozen, some even going so far as to claim it was a new side project for artists such as A-Trak, amongst others. But having been fortunate enough to catch the duo of Larry Tiger and David Woods one chilly Saturday night in Paris several months ago, I can assure you that Tiger & Woods are not hiding for the sake of hiding. Rather, these two talented gentlemen stand behind their fresh stamp on loopy edits and quirky disco tunes and let everyone simply keep talking. It's working.
Any lover of low-slung, handclap-able disco and house music would more than likely be familiar with some of this duo's dance floor orientated work. Taking a deft hand to any number of familiar-yet-unplaceable samples and skillfully arranging them, Tiger & Woods' skill lies in creating tension from an almost monotonous series of loops yet maintaining your full attention with subtle changes and knowing just the right time to change things up completely. Ultimately, the duo's songs urge you to gyrate on the dance floor and catch you completely by surprise as a seemingly endless, short musical progression undergoes a change from grooving rhythm to a full on hands in the air moment. To paraphrase from a previous interview with the group, the goal is ultimately about focusing and extending on the little moments of genius one can find in their favourite song and teasing them to the forefront of their latest record.
Releasing EP's regularly on their own Editainment, a vinyl-only, handstamped boutique record label, the duo have also just had their first full length LP, Through The Green drop on German imprint 'Running Back'. If you want to get more of an idea about what to expect from their first ever Sydney appearance, Through The Green is a great place to start. In addition to this, both Larry and David have recently released solo EP's which keen eyes and ears can seek out on vinyl now.
In the meantime I'm going to grab myself a cold beverage and soak up the sunset by listening to a recent mix done on the impeccable Beats in Space radio show with Tim Sweeney (see link below) - worth minute of your time, be it at work/in the car/Saturday night pre-drinks.
Catch Tiger & Woods in their first ever exclusive Sydney appearance at the música/TUMBALONG festival taking place this October 22nd. I'll be the one front and centre, grinning and dancing like a muppet to Deflowered.
Andrew Boon
