Montreal-born Lunice first conquered the world of breakdancing, which led him to hip-hop, beat-boxing, DJing and producing. After garnering a cult-like following for his unusual but highly entertaining dance routines to the likes of Daft Punk and LazerSword on YouTube, Lunice then followed up with two volumes of “Lazermix”, which featured glitched out, turbo-crunked, electronic remixes of Kanye West, Missy Elliot and Aalyiah, among others. In the same year he self released his first official EP “Out of Touch”, which featured three reworked tracks based on “Out of Touch” by Hall & Oates.

Along with his myriad remixes released on labels including Mad Decent, XL Recordings, Young Turks, Big Dada and Top Billin’, Lunice has also created a 60 minute mix for Boiler Room, a podcast on FACT mag and teamed up with Diplo to produce a popular remix of the Deerhunter track Helicopter. He then went on to release his critically acclaimed solo EP “The Stacker Upper” in 2010 on Scottish-Based label LuckyMe.

Lunice’s individuality is very much apparent in his music. His distinctive style relies on short sharp vocal samples, aggressive snares and high-pitched synths which may sound like a complete disaster, but the result is a futuristic sound which harnesses all the best attributes of ‘90s rap and electronic music.

He’s kept up the dance routines; his cooking dance video filmed at Montreal’s 2010 Osheaga Festival is definitely worth seeking out. “Oh shit! I’m flipping burgers! Gotta cook it on the other side! Aagh!” he says, putting on his sunglasses and walking to the front of the stage to ‘prepare soup’ for the crowd - an endearing trait from a DJ who has just as much an interest in his records making himself want to dance, as well as the crowd.

“I try to push myself as a ‘live artist’ performing on stage much more than a conventional DJ. It’s important to have good stage presence because that energy goes directly into the crowd and the crowd replies with that same energy.”

Following his performance at Sonar 2010 a review by Drowned in Sound states that Lunice “proves his worth in the line up by offering the most entertaining one man show of the weekend” - his unique twist on performance has definitely got him some much-deserved attention. It’s hard not to get caught up with this kind of energy.
