Bon Chat, Bon Rat

Bon Chat, Bon Rat are a Sydney band producing hypnotic electronic music for the wide-eyed and wild. The name literally means, "to a good cat, a good rat", its colloquial translation is along the lines of ‘meeting one’s match’. Significant of their musical influences, perhaps?

Drawing comparisons to Sydneysiders Ghoul, Seekae and Pivot for their approach and aesthetic, Bon Chat, Bon Rat are characteristic of the new wave of indie-inspired electro groups: melodic but not overproduced; ambient but not coma-inducing; and most of all the music has a real sense of warmth.

Their single Blackbird is a lonely journey through sparse synth chords and delay pedals. Or so it appears, until an escalation of dub beats and stabbing guitars uplift the song to a chaotic dance track. The song doesn't contain much more than a single repeated vocal melody, a stuttering beat and some delayed guitar, but that’s all that is needed to create a gorgeous soundscape and to sustain a beautiful listening experience for the length of the song. Here is proof that a musical idea with substance, executed with taste is all that is needed to make great a great song.

The more beat-based sound of Blackbird is a new direction, following the release of their self-titles EP in 2010. They are preparing for an LP release later this year which the trio, consisting of Alex Murray, Reece Cooper and Russell Smith, have been producing at an isolated farm in Lightning Ridge. In the meantime, tours with Toro y Moi (USA) and Parades as well a stack of remixes have kept Bon Chat, Bon Rat busy.

Their live shows are an audio-visual feast featuring projections of hallucinating warped images washing over the stage. Different projections for each show constantly breathe new life into the songs and performance.

They sound exactly like a band from the year 1982 who discovered Macbooks in a time machine then smoked too much weed and proceeded to wig the fuck out. - Pedestrian.tv

What makes Bon Chat Bon Rat worth listening to is their ability to blend seemingly opposing styles together in a way that makes sense. Bon Chat, Bon Rat are like an hour of Rage condensed into song, if you don't like what you hear just wait a few minutes and see what comes next. - Liam Jordan [The AU Review]
